The Proposal
Department of Public Health Engineering, Government of West Bengal, intends to install the Water ATM – A Water Vending Kiosk at the designated sites across the city of Kolkata.
The Installation of the Water ATM would be undertaken in the following order:
Site Development:
- Civil Foundation depending upon the site allotted.
Kiosk Fabrication:
- Metal Grid Structure using MS Square Bars,
- Aluminum Composite Panel Fabrication, &
- Glass Panel Installation and Sliding Door setup.
Raw Water Connection:
- Installation of Overhead Tank of suitable capacity.
- Installation of suitable pump to draw water from the designated source.
Water Treatment:
- Water Quality Analysis of the Raw Water,
- Installation of the suitable purification / filtration system,
- Installation of UV for microbial disinfection, &
- Installation of suitable water chilling facility.
Water ATM:
- Installation of Water ATM with Coin Vending Water Dispenser,
Commissioning:
- Commissioning and Testing of the plant.
THE PRE-REQUISITES

Space Allotment for installation of kiosk housing the Water ATM:
- Length: approx 14 ft
- Breadth: approx 10 ft
- Height : approx 10.5 ft
Raw Water Source
Uninterrupted Electrical Supply (220V, single Phase) preferably via a separate meter provided by the electrical supplier.
Permissions for
- Digging an underground reservoir of approx 3000 liters.
- Installation of overhead reservoir of approx 1000 liters.
THE WATER ATM
The Water ATM is an innovative concept in the field of water treatment which can be customized for installation of a water treatment plant with microbial disinfection with a water chiller facility. The Water ATM will dispense one liter of purified, ambient chilled water against an affordable cost.
The Water ATM has coin slots to insert either Two Nos One Rupee Coins or One Nos Two Rupee Coin, and it will automatically dispense 1 liter of purified, chilled water.
The Water ATM will be installed with Iron Elimination System and Activated Carbon System for removal of iron and any odour or unpleasant taste from the water.
The Water ATM, is the first of its kind project undertaken by the Department of Public Health Engineering, Govt. of West Bengal, is capable of dispensing up to 150 liters of chilled drinking water per hour. It dispenses 1 liters of chilled drinking water in 20 seconds and will be operational for at least 12 hours per day.
Installed within the plant is high quality grade Activated Carbon which removes all odour from the water and gives it a crystal clear appearance, the water will also pass through UV Rays which will kill all bacteriological contamination.
The Water ATM Project is conceptualized by the Department with the aim to provide ambient cool drinking water to the masses at an affordable cost.
As a pilot project we installed The Water ATM at Ekdalia Evergreen Club premises and the enthusiasm of people help us to dispense chilled and purified water during Durga Puja, 2015. From the period of 15th October, 2015 to 26th October, 2015, the sale of purified water was approximately Rupees Twenty Five Thousand only.
THE PROPOSED WATER ATM
The Water ATM is a completely automatic water vending machine with two water vending points for dispensing upto 150 liters of water per hour. The Water ATM will vend water after inserting coins into the vending machines.
The Water ATM is a unique concept of dispensing pure and safe water in lieu of a nominal amount of money. The automated system of Water ATM will ensure that no spoilage and pilferage will happen.
This machine will accept coins issued by the Reserve Bank of India.
THERE IS NO PROVISION FOR REFUND OF COINS.
