- The Water ATM is an innovative concept brought forward by the Public Health Engineering Department, Govt.of West Bengal,which involves installing of a Water Treatment Plant which is automatically controlled by intelligent instruments and devices.
- The Water ATM can be customized with some additional facilities like water chilling facility and coin based water vending facility. The Water ATM will be installed with Iron Elimination Filter for removal of iron and Activated Carbon System for removal of any odour or unpleasant taste from the water and gives it a crystal clear appearance; the water will also pass through UV Disinfection to eliminate bacteriological contamination. The Water ATM Project is conceptualized by the Department with the aim to provide ambient cool drinking water in all seasons to the masses at an affordable cost.
- The Water ATM with Kiosk, is the first of its kind project undertaken by the Department of Public Health Engineering, Govt. of West Bengal, is capable of dispensing up to 150 litres of chilled drinking water per hour. It dispenses 1 litres of chilled drinking water in 12 seconds and will be operational for at least 18 hours per day.
- PHE has already installed 206 nos. of Water ATMs in different school premises in arsenic affected areas of North 24 Parganas district.
